Bangalore International Airport
As the new Bangalore International Airport was making its final preparation for opening, it needed a function on its website to provide passengers with up-to-date flight information. So the airport turned to two of its trusted partners -- UFIS Airport Solutions (UFIS-AS) and Oracle -- for a solution. Working together, the two provided a web portal, just in time for the airport's opening in May 2008.
Using the same information that passengers in the airport see, UFIS-AS built a link to Oracle's portal. Oracle then designed the web interface for Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the owner and operator of the airport. Before coming to the airport, passengers can check the status of their arriving or departing flight.
This mini-project came as a result of the success that UFIS-AS and its partner Siemens Information Systems Limited (SISL), India, had in installing the flight information system and system integration platform at Bangalore. For its part, UFIS-AS delivered its UFIS® system incorporating its Airport Operational Database (AODB), Flight Information Processing System (FIPS) including apron management, Flight Information Display System (FIDS), and interfaces to six sub-systems.
In addition, UFIS-AS recently installed its Data Changes module -- a tool which allows BIAL to audit changes made to its system.
The UFIS® AODB is the heart of the IT system. The AODB provides a state-of-the-art, fully scalable solution, combining the highest level of security with real-time performance. The most important function of the AODB is to provide a data integration platform for all IT systems at the airport as well as off-airport systems. Information from UFIS® and other systems is stored in the AODB and is made available to authorized applications and systems.
The UFIS® FIPS supports airport operations by enabling the user to manage their flight schedules and to process incoming flight information changes in a real-time setting. As a part of the FIPS module, telex processing also allows for the interpretation of incoming telexes, updating the appropriate data in the AODB and making it accessible to the users. The apron management application is a rule-based system which enables planners and dispatchers to produce an up-to-the-minute plan for gate, stand, check-in counter and baggage belt assignment to individual aircraft. An easy-to-use rule generator is provided for the operators to develop new rules or edit existing ones to cater for changes in operational procedures and agreements with the airlines.
Flight information is displayed to the public in the concourses, check-in areas, gates, and baggage claim areas on 153 large-screen monitors. These include 53 public displays, 53 check-in counter displays, 20 gate displays, and 17 baggage displays. Besides the web-based counter application running on the CUTE workstations, a web-based staff information application provides information throughout the whole airport intranet. This application enables staff to call up flight and airport-related information relevant to their particular tasks.
Located at Devanahalli, approximately 40 kilometers from Bangalore, the airport has a capacity for 11 million passengers per year and is able to handle 27 aircraft per hour. There are 40 aircraft stands, 35 check-in counters and seven passenger gates to facilitate multiple flights. Five air bridges enable direct access to the aircraft from the terminal.
"We are pleased that this is the second green-field airport in India, after Hyderabad, to be powered by UFIS®," said Holger Mattig, president and CEO of UFIS-AS. "Both airports have the potential to become important international hubs. We are glad to be able to provide solutions to meet their growing needs."
